Clients engaging in therapy with me can expect to feel valued. I listen to my clients’ successes and challenges and help clients capitalize on their strengths. I also treasure my clients’ background and culture. In the first session, I will listen to your stories and use current research and assessment tools to help with diagnosis. Collaboratively, we will set treatment goals and a treatment plan. Whether you are coming to treat mood, stress, or your relationship, I will tailor the treatment plan to match your personality and goals.
When it comes to therapy, I have an integrative approach. Based on the unique personality of my client and goals for therapy, I draw from several empirically supported treatments to suit the client’s needs best. If you are stymied by faulty thinking, we’ll identify those thoughts and understand what steered you off course. I’ll also help you create a plan of action for better well-being. Feeling stuck with your goals? I can help you learn how to accept your experiences and circumstances, especially circumstances that cannot be changed. Questioning your life choices and purpose? Together we’ll explore your existential questions and their emotional expression. In therapy, I help increase the well-being of all my clients and help them achieve what matters most in their lives.
I have a doctoral degree in psychology and have provided individual therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, and psychological assessment in hospital and private practice settings. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Mindfulness-based Meditation, Clinical Hypnotherapy, and Humanistic/Existential Therapy. I have provided services at diverse institutions including the Queensway Carleton Hospital, Jewish General Hospital, and in private practice.
I am licensed by the Florida Board of Psychology, the College of Psychologists of Ontario, and the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT).
Professional Affiliations: The American Psychological Association, the Ontario Psychological Association, the Florida Psychological Association, the Ottawa Academy of Psychology, and the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis.
A Little More about Me and the Nature Pictures on this Site
You can't rush your healing, darkness has it's teaching (Trevor Hall)
My favourite time to walk is before dawn when I might catch sight of baby raccoons gazing at me from behind a tree. As the first pillar of light streams over the horizon, the songs of birds captivate my attention as each warbler starts their varied songs at different times. As daylight floods the earth, I feel lucky to see a squirrel or a dragonfly starting their day.
I am frequently plugged into the digital world listening to podcasts and music of diverse styles. These early morning walks, in contrast, are a chance to unplug and let nature prepare me to be open and ready for my first client. I’m ready and would welcome you to join me for therapy.
The nature pictures on this site are all from my hikes and bike rides throughout Florida, Ottawa, and Gatineau.
About Ms. Lea Sutherland
Registered Psychotherapist
in Ontario
I work with adult individuals and couples.
🇨🇦 (343) 305-1106
Growth and transformation are largely based on an environment of compassion, safety, and collaboration. Throughout our journey together as an individual or as a couple, I provide a confidential therapeutic relationship marked by compassion, empathy, and authentic, genuine engagement.
I help individuals and couples examine their distress by working through their experiences, issues, or concerns to understand and clarify their current beliefs, emotions, and behaviours as they relate to personal decisions and their relationships.
We’ll work together to both diminish your symptoms and associated distress, and then we’ll deepen our work to understand issues underlying your concerns and symptoms. As an integrative therapist, I
incorporate modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy, and
The Gottman Method.
I am a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario and a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
I work with clients presenting with a variety of issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, shame, loss, grief, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, intimacy, and effective communication
issues. I endeavour to help clients realize their potential for inner development, self-directed growth, and nurturing relationships. Ultimately, my goal in therapy is to facilitate and accommodate clients reclaiming their ability to make mindful choices and decisions, and to gain autonomy over their lives.
